| SHOVA360 :: A World First |
In August 2011, I will set off from Maclear's Beacon on top of the world famous Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.
My goal is to undertake and complete...
THE FIRST HUMAN-POWERED,
VERTICAL CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD
STAGES:
An expedition of this magnitude will push the human body to its absolute limits and is nearly impossible to plan in its entirety prior to departure. So, I have decided to tackle it in stages. There are ten logical stages, and each begins at the precise point where the previous ended. If needed, I will be able to deviate and then return to that spot and continue with the next stage.
The stages are:
- Stage 1 :: Africa
- Stage 2 :: Middle East
- Stage 3 :: Europe
- Stage 4 :: Into the Arctic
- Stage 5 :: Arctic crossing via the North Pole
- Stage 6 :: Out of the Arctic
- Stage 7 :: The America's
- Stage 8 :: Across to Antarctica
- Stage 9 :: Antarctica traverse
- Stage 10 :: Across the ocean, back home!
MEANS OF TRAVEL:
Being a human-powered expedition, it excludes a considerable amount of options... so, in short, I can only make progress by the following means:
- On foot: walking, running, skiing
- Pedal power: bicycle, pedal boat
- Paddle power: kayaking
GUIDELINES FOR HUMAN-POWERED CIRCUMNAVIGATIONS:
An independent assessment by outdoor pursuit experts and geographers from Explorers Web Inc. has resulted in published guidelines on what constitutes a true circumnavigation of the world by human power.
According to their Adventurestats site, a true circumnavigation of the earth must:
- Start and finish at the same point, traveling in one general direction
- Reach two antipodes [Two diametrically opposite places on Earth].
From the above follows that a true circumnavigation must:
- Cross the equator
- Cross all longitudes [in my case, latitudes]
- Cover a minimum of 40,000km or 21,600NM [a great circle]
These definitions are endorsed and supported by the following organizations:
- British Human Power Club
- Ocean Rowing Society
- The Scientific Exploration Society
- Sir Ranulph Fiennes [TransGlobe Expedition] |
