CYCLIST SAFETY & MEMORIAL RIDE
What I thought would be a nice way to get home after a 2500km walk across South Africa turned into a campaign ride after I heard of eight cyclists being killed on South African roads in the week of the Argus Cycle Tour. So much and no more!

I now embark on an annual ride to raise awareness for cyclists on our roads, while honouring those who have lost their lives doing what we all love so much.

2011 CYCLIST SAFETY & MEMORIAL RIDE:
Because extreme times call for extreme measures, I will be stepping it up for 2011! Cycling 2000km from Beit Bridge [our border with Zimbabwe] to Cape Town, I look to take just six days... and will then cycle the Argus on the seventh day, rounding it off to 2100km.

What will be different this time is that I will have a support crew with me, as I will be travelling for about 18hrs a day! The two members will cycle with me at times, drive ahead, handle online media and keep me in one piece.

More information will be available soon once some details are finalised.

2010 CYCLIST SAFETY & MEMORIAL RIDE
Having not been on a bicycle for about five months, it was certainly not going to be my easiest ride. But, aboard an old-style singlespeed cruiser I left Johannesburg with a small escort... and headed along the N1 to Cape Town. From intense heat to icy cold, high winds to pouring rain, I experienced it all during this life-changing journey. South African hospitality and generosity was incredible, again, and I believe the ride made a good impact through the active involvement of fellow cyclists and citizens. I was joined for the last 50km or so by a group of enthusiastic cyclists, eager to make a stand.

An enormous thanks to Desere Girdlestone for her assistance in organising accommodation along the way, Lisa de Speville for helping drive the media and all the sponsors who made it possible.
