| RIDE OF SILENCE |
On Sunday 15 May 2011, I will set off from Cape Agulhas [the southernmost tip of Africa], on a quest that will see me travel over 75,000km [50,000miles]. My goal is to undertake and complete...
THE FIRST HUMAN-POWERED,
VERTICAL CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD
STAGES:
An expedition of this magnitude will push the human body to its absolute limits and is nearly impossible to plan for prior to departure. So, I have decided to tackle it in stages. There are seven logical stages, and each begins at the precise point where the previous ended. If needed, I will be able to deviate and then return to that spot and continue with the next stage.
The stages are:
- Stage One :: Africa
- Stage Two :: Europe
- Stage Three :: Arctic
- Stage Four :: North America
- Stage Five :: South America
- Stage Six :: Antarctica [including the Drake Passage]
- Stage Seven :: Southern Ocean
MEANS OF TRAVEL:
Being a human-powered expedition, it excludes a considerable amount of options... so, in short, I can only make progress by the following means:
- On foot: walking, running, skiing
- Pedal power: bicycle, pedal boat
- Paddle power: kayaking
GUIDELINES FOR HUMAN-POWERED CIRCUMNAVIGATIONS:
An independent assessment by outdoor pursuit experts and geographers from Explorers Web Inc. has resulted in published guidelines on what constitutes a true circumnavigation of the world by human power.
According to their Adventurestats site, a true circumnavigation of the earth must:
- Start and finish at the same point, traveling in one general direction
- Reach two antipodes [Two diametrically opposite places on Earth].
From the above follows that a true circumnavigation must:
- Cross the equator
- Cross all longitudes [in my case, latitudes]
- Cover a minimum of 40,000km or 21,600NM [a great circle]
These definitions are endorsed and supported by the following organizations:
- British Human Power Club
- Ocean Rowing Society
- The Scientific Exploration Society
- Sir Ranulph Fiennes [TransGlobe Expedition] |
| RIDE OF SILENCE POEM |
Tonight we number many but ride as one
In honor of those not with us, friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, sons
With helmets on tight and heads down low,
We ride in silence, cautious and slow
The wheels start spinning in the lead pack
But tonight we ride and no one attacks
The dark sunglasses cover our tears
Remembering those we held so dear
Tonight's ride is to make others aware
The road is there for all to share
To those not with us or by our side,
May God be your partner on your final ride
